Julie DeVaughn is a junior at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, VA. Julie is majoring in Communication Studies with a concentration in Organizational Communication, and a minor in General Business. An accomplishment for her is earning an achievement for the Dean's List at JMU. Along with her studies, she also participates in many on campus activities such as Greek InterVarsity, To Write Love On Her Arms, Active Minds, and is a member and sister of the Delta Gamma Fraternity.
Julie transferred to JMU in the Fall of 2012 after attending Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) for three years. During her time at NOVA she received an Associates Degree in General Studies and an Associates Degree in Social Science while maintaing a 3.8 GPA. Other activities she was involved with while attending NOVA was church, researching the Deaf culture and teaching herself American Sign Language (ASL), and working five jobs at once. As of now, Julie is a substitute teacher at a private preschool, Chesterbrook Academy which she works at over breaks and anytime she is home. She is very passionate about her job and loves teaching and working with the children. No matter what, she believes a child can always put a smile on your face.
When Julie does have free time, which is rare, she likes to spend time with her Delta Gamma sisters, craft, and teach herself more ASL. Another one of Julie's true passions is raising awareness about organizations such as: the American Diabetes Association, Children's Hospital, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, and the National Association of the Deaf.

The Redskins are obviously not the GREATEST TEAM in the NFL, but we still love them and will always cheer no matter what especially when the referees mess up but DON’T FIX THEIR MISTAKES. I was at the game and the Redskins were playing very well. The referees were just idiots.
Referee Jeff Triplette signaled third down but the head linesman — with Washington in a ‘hurry-up’ situation — incorrectly motioned for the chain crew to advance the chains, which caused the down boxes to read first down.
Following a Washington incomplete pass, the chains were moved back and the down boxes correctly reset to fourth down.
Dear Triplette, I feel like you need to be fired. Maybe the Redskins would have won, maybe they still would have lost, but all that matters though is the fact the officials ruined the end of that game with the most embarrassing mistake ever.

The Redskins have absolutely no chance of making it to the NFC playoff contention and have a firm grip of placing last in the NFC East. The Redskins beat the Giants last season at Fed Ex Field 17-16. December 29, 2013 the Redskins will be playing the Giants again, and I hope 1. THERE ARE BETTER REFS WHO DO THEIR JOB CORRECTLY/ADMIT TO THEIR MISTAKES and 2. THAT THE REDSKINS WILL KICK THE NEW YORK GIANTS ASSES at that game.

I have worked in the restaurant business for about five years and I have never witnessed ANYTHING like this. I never knew people could be so cruel. If I was Morales, I would have told the woman I didn’t like the way she lived her lifestyle.
Morales ended up posting a picture of the receipt on Facebook, saying that the mother of two children was shocked by her “short hair.” Morales wrote that she was offended and hurt and that
Since Morales posted the photo of the receipt there have been over $2,000 worth of tips given to her from people all around the world. People were traveling to the restaurant, sending money, and calling to give Morales a tip. There were also many people who visited the restaurant and requested to speak with Morales or to just sit at one of her tables.
Morales was so busy fielding the calls and emails of support that she hardly had a chance to wait any tables, even those who came just to see her. But that hasn’t stopped the tips from coming in by the hundreds of dollars. Jason Papvero, who GAVE A $50 cash tip despite never sitting down or eating at the restaurant.
Bobby Vanderhoff, the manager of the restaurant said,
The restaurant doesn’t tolerate discrimination of any kind and the customers were no longer welcome there. We support Dayna 100 percent. She’s a wonderful person and a wonderful server, and we are extremely proud of her and the way she handled this situation.

Police from St. Petersburg, Florida arrested a 15 year-old girl who they say has sent several hundred of threatening texts to three other 15 year-old girls. The girl, who is to remain unnamed was friends with the three other girls until they had a falling out.
The girl is now being charged with three counts of aggravated stalkingand one count of tampering with a witness. The suspect admitted to sending some of the texts, but not all of them. Many of these texts were allegedly death threats– one saying “if this isn’t bullying then I don’t know what is.”
On Monday, when the girl was interviewed by the police, they told her to stay away from the victims. The suspect continued to send threatening textswhich resulted in tampering with a witness.
When will bullying stop? Today? Tomorrow? Next month? NEVER!? How many children will die due to being bullied by their classmates or old friends?
About a month ago two teens in Florida were arrested for cyber bullying which caused a girl to jump off the top of an abandoned concrete plant. These two girls were charged with felony aggravated stalking.

We’ve seen bullying in the school systems, work place, at home, in the NFL, and many more places, but why can’t anyone do anything to stop it? There needs to be more done about bullying and cyber bullying. It’s not easy to speak up about being bullied, but there needs to be more severe punishments for those who bully during school or anywhere else. When I was in middle school/high school, there was just “a slap on the wrist” if you were to bully someone. That is not going to do anything. STAND UP and DO SOMETHING. Don’t just sit there and watch someone get bullied. Too many innocent lives are taken due to bullying and it needs to stop. Stop bullying, save a life.
The final incident that occurred to cause Martin to leave the team was in the team’s cafeteria when he sat down to eat. After sitting down the other players he joined got up and walked away and he was left to sit alone. I don’t know about you, but this does not seem like something you do to a teammate. There were also texts from Incognito using racial slurs in threatening texts to Martin.
Incognito was told by coaching staff to “toughen up” Martin. The general manager, Jeff Ireland, told Martin’s agent that the player should “punch”Incognito to make the alleged bullying stop. HOW WOULD THIS HELP ANYTHING? “Violence is NEVER the answer,” yet the general manager said Martin should respond back with VIOLENCE. How would this help Martin? Isn’t it possible that Incognito [or other teammates] would bully Martin even more and harder? Also, if the general manager knew the tiniest bit about the possible bullying of Martin, WHY DIDN’T HE DO ANYTHING? WHY DIDN’T HE TRY TO STOP IT OR TALK WITH THE OTHER PLAYERS? This could have saved the Dolphins a lot of trouble.
Incognito is denying the bullying of Martin and said the threatening texts and racial slurs were just him playing around and that is their “brotherhood.” I don’t know about your friends, family, teammates, or whoever else you hang out with or see, but TO ME THESE DO NOT SEEM very brotherhood-like.
Even Incognito’s ex-teammate from the St. Louis Rams called him a ‘scumbag.’ Cam Cleeland, the ex-teammate of Incognito said he dealt with hazing on a very personal level when he came into the league. Cleeland said,
I’m not afraid to say that he was an immature, unrealistic scumbag. When it came down to it, he had no personality, he was a locker room cancer, and he just wanted to fight everybody all the time. It was bizarre beyond belief.
It is said to believe that the 30 year-old guard will reportedly consider filing a grievance against the team.
As a college student, I hear a lot about bullying, hazing, emotional distress, and harassment. All of these things which are frowned upon no matter what you are a part of. To see that this is happening in the NFL is beyond ridiculous and I thought that an NFL team would be supportive of all their players, just like a family should be.
Homeless veteran Jim Wolf has been suffering from alcoholism and poverty. This video shows Dégagé Ministries giving Wolf a makeover. According to the video, the makeover has given Wolf the inspiration to turn his life around! Wolf is scheduled to have his own housing and is attending Alcoholics Anonymous (for the first time)!

EIGHT ARRESTS, MELTDOWNS, AND FIGHTS SINCE 2009 FOR CHRIS BROWN. Although, SOMEHOW the singer keeps getting away with everything and does not even have to go to jail. Well, he’s spent a couple of nights there but doesn’t really have to suffer any consequences of his actions. Is this fair? Is this the payment you get for being ‘rich & famous’? It seems like Brown is becoming more famous for his aggressive behavior than his music these days.
The reason Brown’s charge was reduced is because the injuries to the victim were minor, even though the victim said Brown broke his nose.
Is that a real reason to reduce Brown’s charges? He has had MULTIPLE run-ins with the law and is still on PROBATION for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna. A broken nose may not be as severe as a broken rib or multiple injuries, but Brown WILL NEVER learn how to do the right thing if he keeps getting off. This is unfair and something should be done about this. Is it because he is famous? Is it because he has lots of money? Brown should NOT get away with all of these run-ins with the law considering there have been 8 of THEM IN THE PAST 4 YEARS.

Gary lives in an area that is prone to wildfires. He collects rain and snow runoff in barrels on his property, mainly in case a wildfire breaks out by his house.
Well, get this. The state of Oregon says those barrels are illegal reservoirs, and that damn water is owned by the Medford Water Commission.
Yet, Chris Brown is running around free after multiple assaults, fights, hit-and-runs, and more violent behavior towards other people. He spent a night in jail…he spent two nights in jail…Brown should stay in jail for months after everything he has done.
Perhaps Fischer, and the person who dreamed up the offensive Hillary buttons are less concerned about the former first lady being a ‘lesbian’ or ‘bisexual’ or ‘left wing’ but are truly fearful of a female leading our nation. And they would not be the only ones.
The next time you are brought into a conversation focusing on Hillary’s sexual disposition, her preference for pantsuits or her various body parts, try to refocus the talk to more important, substantive issues, like her foreign policy views, the way in which she intends to fight terrorist cells or how to end the war on drugs.
“The government closure came during the peak period for preparing IRS systems for the 2014 filing season,” the agency said in a statement. “Programming, testing and deployment of more than 50 IRS systems is needed to handle processing of nearly 150 million tax returns.”
So, the IRS gets to push back the start date of tax season, yet they STILL REQUIRE US to have our taxes done by APRIL 15TH? A shorter filing season AND delayed refunds?Is this fair to us?Also, the IRS is urging people not to send in their paper filings early, since they won’t be processed any sooner. Thank you government shutdown and THANK YOU IRS for making everything your way. You would think the IRS would give people a bit of a break and an extra week or two, due to the fact that the shutdown wasn’t our fault!
Of course Halloween is that one night (or in college, it is either those one OR two weekends) you get to dress up as whatever you want and “not be judged.” I have been to three different colleges for Halloween and the most interesting thing that I have heard was some boy(I’ll refer to him as a boy even though he was 18 and probably considers himself a “man”) put the word “slutty“ in front of every woman’s costume that he saw. “Slutty police officer.” “Slutty cat.” “Slutty leprechaun.” “Slutty cheerleader.” Slutty this, slutty that. Yes, it is Halloween. Yes, the point is to dress up, or in this case, dress down. Yes, we all know a lot of women choose to show more skin than they normally would on any other night. And yes, we all know people try and choose the most ridiculous outfits because on Halloween nothing is “offensive.” Well, that is where people are ENTIRELY WRONG. This, is about two costumes, two different businesses were selling, yet the costumes were just so insensitive and the way the made the costumes does not make any sense.
As a college individual, I enjoy dressing up on Halloween and going out to all of those “wild” Halloween parties, but I have honestly seem some disturbing costumes which just not okay with me. Also, as a college individual, I am fully supportive of raising awareness for mental health. I am actually too hyped up about it because it is usually that ONE subject people think they know everything about. I know, I don’t know everything about it; but when people come tell me they are so“DEPRESSED” times infinity because their favorite television show does not come on for another week, I just get so upset and annoyed. People use the words “depression, anxiety, I want to kill myself, bi-polar, ADD, OCD, ADHD” so freely and they just throw them around like it is nothing. To me, that is not okay.
Do they ever think of the people who are truly suffering from depression?Do they ever think of the people who do try and kill themselves everyday? Do they think of the people who cannot do certain things or have to carry around a brown paper bag due to having anxiety and could possibly have a panic attack at ANY given moment? My answer to this is, probably not.Why? Because of course we know about mental illnesses, but movies and television shows almost play them as a joke; the depressed person always gets better, the anxious person always becomes relaxed, the “I want to kill myself” person always lives and has a great life. The worst take on movies and television shows- psychiatric units. Oh no, that person was in the psychiatric unit, they’re “crazy.” “Watch out for that person they might go all crazy on you because they have multiple personalities.” In all honesty, I just want this stigma about mental health to go away, but that is probably too much to ask. Well, until this article, I honestly thought no one had regrets for something they said or did about mental health. The usual response, “Oh, you know I am just kidding. I don’t seriously mean I’m going to kill myself.”
It is things like this that makepeople THINK SUICIDE/MENTAL HEALTH is a JOKE.
In the UK, two Halloweenstores made costumes to represent a “patient” in a psychiatric unit. One of the costumes was titled “mental patient,” and the other was “psycho ward.” One of the businesses even has a costume called “diabetic.” This is what annoys me. What mental health illness are these costumes supposed to describe and be? Also, have they ever seen what patients wear in a psychiatric unit- other than on television and in movies?Surprisingly, these two costumes brought up mental health awareness in a “positive” (using that word very lightly right now) in the UK.
Mind, a mental health charity based in the UK, pointed out how these costumes work to “fuel” negative ideas about the broad scope of individuals with and experiences of mental illness.
People associate the words crazy, insane, weird, and many others with the term “mental health.” Every mental health illness is different to each and every person. Just like every individual has something different about them. There are all types of levels and types of depression, ADD, OCD, anxiety, and every mental illness out there. It is not the same for two exact people. When you tell someone something and they say “oh, I know exactly how you feel.”Sometimes people just say that to make you feel better. Sometimes people do know how you feel. One example in my life was when my grandmother passed away. I saw her every single day. “My grandmother passed away 3 years ago. I know how you feel. Although, my grandmother lived 5 hours away.” They think they know, but everyone is always on a different relationship level with family members and friends. Some people have never even met their grandparents. My grandparents, they were (and still are) my heroes.
I write a lot about bullying and people committing suicide because they have been bullied. Some people just don’t understand what can happen when they say “go kill yourself,” or “I wish you would die.” Words like that are harsh and unnecessary. This horrible costume idea, “might be a blessing in disguise” says Dr. Simon Williams of Chicago.
“The fact that it happened at all shows that there is still a lot of work to be done to combat mental health stigma.Someone looked at that costume and decided “this is a mental patient”, and thought that was fine,” says Dean Burnett. Many other experts and activists expressed outrage, and the public also took to Twitter to comment and share accurate accounts of what it’s like to be a “mental patient.”
Following the feedback, both Asda and Tesco removed the items from their online stores and issued a public apology.
[This scandal brings] issues of stigma in mental health to public scrutiny.” We live and work in the hope that as these incidents arise, society will become more aware of the power of stigma and the importance of community in combatting it. This Halloween, and every day, consider carefully how the many people with mental health struggles are represented and how you can contribute to more accurate, compassionate depictions.
I understand it is Halloween, and I understand people being immature about adding the word “slutty” to every woman as they walk by in a costume (and how annoying it is), but do they really have to go as far as making a costume about a mental health patient (who has no control over their illness), or even the costume as a diabetic!? What is our world coming to?
