Police from St. Petersburg, Florida arrested a 15 year-old girl who they say has sent several hundred of threatening texts to three other 15 year-old girls. The girl, who is to remain unnamed was friends with the three other girls until they had a falling out.

CyberThe girl is now being charged with three counts of aggravated stalking and one count of tampering with a witnessThe suspect admitted to sending some of the texts, but not all of them. Many of these texts were allegedly death threats– one saying “if this isn’t bullying then I don’t know what is.”

TextCyberOn Monday, when the girl was interviewed by the police, they told her to stay away from the victims. The suspect continued to send threatening texts which resulted in tampering with a witness.

When will bullying stop? Today? Tomorrow? Next month? NEVER!? How many children will die due to being bullied by their classmates or old friends?

Bullying3About a month ago two teens in Florida were arrested for cyber bullying which caused a girl to jump off the top of an abandoned concrete plant. These two girls were charged with felony aggravated stalking.

  • Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied onlineabout the same number have engaged in cyber bullying
  • More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyber threats online
  • Over 25% of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the internet
  • Over half of young people do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs.
  • Bully victims are between 2 to 9 times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims
  • Nearly 30% of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying

BullyingWe’ve seen bullying in the school systems, work place, at home, in the NFL, and many more places, but why can’t anyone do anything to stop it? There needs to be more done about bullying and cyber bullying. It’s not easy to speak up about being bullied, but there needs to be more severe punishments for those who bully during school or anywhere else. When I was in middle school/high school, there was just “a slap on the wrist” if you were to bully someone. That is not going to do anything. STAND UP and DO SOMETHING. Don’t just sit there and watch someone get bullied. Too many innocent lives are taken due to bullying and it needs to stop. Stop bullying, save a life.

Unfortunately, the answer is NO. However, the start of the tax season, which was supposed to start on January 21, 2014 will now be DELAYED.

BenFrankIt’s my money and they need it now.

Due to the government shutdown that lasted 16 days, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be delaying the start of tax season by one to two weeksAbout 90% of the IRS agency was not operational, which puts them behind on the work they were supposed to be doing on the processing systems before tax returns start flooding in.

“The government closure came during the peak period for preparing IRS systems for the 2014 filing season,” the agency said in a statement. “Programming, testing and deployment of more than 50 IRS systems is needed to handle processing of nearly 150 million tax returns.”

So, the IRS gets to push back the start date of tax season, yet they STILL REQUIRE US to have our taxes done by APRIL 15TH? A shorter filing season AND delayed refunds? Is this fair to us? Also, the IRS is urging people not to send in their paper filings early, since they won’t be processed any sooner. Thank you government shutdown and THANK YOU IRS for making everything your way. You would think the IRS would give people a bit of a break and an extra week or two, due to the fact that the shutdown wasn’t our fault! Tax

Of course Halloween is that one night (or in college, it is either those one OR two weekends) you get to dress up as whatever you want and “not be judged.” I have been to three different colleges for Halloween and the most interesting thing that I have heard was some boy (I’ll refer to him as a boy even though he was 18 and probably considers himself a “man”) put the word slutty in front of every woman’s costume that he saw. “Slutty police officer.” “Slutty cat.” “Slutty leprechaun.” “Slutty cheerleader.” Slutty this, slutty that. Yes, it is Halloween. Yes, the point is to dress up, or in this case, dress down. Yes, we all know a lot of women choose to show more skin than they normally would on any other night.  And yes, we all know people try and choose the most ridiculous outfits because on Halloween nothing is “offensive.” Well, that is where people are ENTIRELY WRONG. This, is about two costumes, two different businesses were selling, yet the costumes were just so insensitive and the way the made the costumes does not make any sense.

As a college individual, I enjoy dressing up on Halloween and going out to all of those “wild” Halloween parties, but I have honestly seem some disturbing costumes which just not okay with me. Also, as a college individual, I am fully supportive of raising awareness for mental health. I am actually too hyped up about it because it is usually that ONE subject people think they know everything about. I know, I don’t know everything about it; but when people come tell me they are so “DEPRESSED” times infinity because their favorite television show does not come on for another week, I just get so upset and annoyed. People use the words depression, anxiety, I want to kill myself, bi-polar, ADD, OCD, ADHD” so freely and they just throw them around like it is nothing. To me, that is not okay.

Do they ever think of the people who are truly suffering from depression? Do they ever think of the people who do try and kill themselves everyday? Do they think of the people who cannot do certain things or have to carry around a brown paper bag due to having anxiety and could possibly have a panic attack at ANY given moment? My answer to this is, probably not. Why? Because of course we know about mental illnesses, but movies and television shows almost play them as a joke; the depressed person always gets better, the anxious person always becomes relaxed, the “I want to kill myself” person always lives and has a great life. The worst take on movies and television shows- psychiatric units. Oh no, that person was in the psychiatric unit, they’re “crazy.” “Watch out for that person they might go all crazy on you because they have multiple personalities.” In all honesty, I just want this stigma about mental health to go away, but that is probably too much to ask. Well, until this article, I honestly thought no one had regrets for something they said or did about mental health. The usual response, “Oh, you know I am just kidding. I don’t seriously mean I’m going to kill myself.”

HumorwrongIt is things like this that make people THINK SUICIDE/MENTAL HEALTH is a JOKE.

In the UK, two Halloween stores made costumes to represent a “patient” in a psychiatric unit. One of the costumes was titled “mental patient,” and the other was “psycho ward.” One of the businesses even has a costume called “diabetic.” This is what annoys me. What mental health illness are these costumes supposed to describe and be? Also, have they ever seen what patients wear in a psychiatric unit- other than on television and in movies?Asda mental patient costume PsychoSurprisingly, these two costumes brought up mental health awareness in a “positive” (using that word very lightly right now) in the UK.

Mind, a mental health charity based in the UK, pointed out how these costumes work to “fuel” negative ideas about the broad scope of individuals with and experiences of mental illness.

People associate the words crazy, insane, weird, and many others with the term “mental health.” Every mental health illness is different to each and every person. Just like every individual has something different about them. There are all types of levels and types of depression, ADD, OCD, anxiety, and every mental illness out there. It is not the same for two exact people. When you tell someone something and they say “oh, I know exactly how you feel.” Sometimes people just say that to make you feel better. Sometimes people do know how you feel. One example in my life was when my grandmother passed away. I saw her every single day. “My grandmother passed away 3 years ago. I know how you feel. Although, my grandmother lived 5 hours away.” They think they know, but everyone is always on a different relationship level with family members and friends. Some people have never even met their grandparents. My grandparents, they were (and still are) my heroes.

I write a lot about bullying and people committing suicide because they have been bullied. Some people just don’t understand what can happen when they say “go kill yourself,” or “I wish you would die.” Words like that are harsh and unnecessary. This horrible costume idea, “might be a blessing in disguise” says Dr. Simon Williams of Chicago.

The fact that it happened at all shows that there is still a lot of work to be done to combat mental health stigma.Someone looked at that costume and decided “this is a mental patient”, and thought that was fine,” says Dean Burnett. Many other experts and activists expressed outrage, and the public also took to Twitter to comment and share accurate accounts of what it’s like to be a “mental patient.”

Following the feedback, both Asda and Tesco removed the items from their online stores and issued a public apology.

[This scandal brings] issues of stigma in mental health to public scrutiny.” We live and work in the hope that as these incidents arise, society will become more aware of the power of stigma and the importance of community in combatting it. This Halloween, and every day, consider carefully how the many people with mental health struggles are represented and how you can contribute to more accurate, compassionate depictions.

I understand it is Halloween, and I understand people being immature about adding the word “slutty” to every woman as they walk by in a costume (and how annoying it is), but do they really have to go as far as making a costume about a mental health patient (who has no control over their illness), or even the costume as a diabetic!? What is our world coming to?

I know Jimmy Kimmel is an actor and comedian and some people may not look at him as a “great news source,” but his idea of quizzing pedestrians about The Affordable Care Act and ObamaCare, was brilliant. It turned out that most people DISAGREED ObamaCare but AGREED with The Affordable Care Act. What they OBVIOUSLY don’t know is that….THEY’RE THE SAME THING! Clearly, a lot of people are uninformed about what is going on in the world. This, leaves me speechless.

Here are some responses from the pedestrians who were interviewed:

“I just think there’s a lot of holes in it and that it needs to be revamped. I just think it hasn’t been thought out,” one person says when asked why she doesn’t like Obamacare. When asked about the Affordable Care Act, she responds, “It’s better but I’m not happy with that, either.”

“Just the name says it all,” adds another man, who said he’d sign up for the Affordable Care Act but not Obamacare.

I am so glad the people who do not support ObamaCare, but support the Affordable Care Act are so informed. This is honestly pathetic.

recent CNBC poll found 46 percent of respondents said they are opposed to Obamacare. But only 37 percent of the same people taking part in the poll say they oppose the Affordable Care Act.

We all know that the government got shut down today and that over 800,000 employees are not working now. The shutdown and employees not working could cost the economy $1 billion, A WEEK.

During the shutdown there is no visiting national museums, no watching the panda cam from the National Zoo, and no camping in national parks. What is the upside to this? D.C. businesses are OFFERING FREEBIES to government employees who show their government identification!

If a federal shutdown happens, @DCReynoldsBar will offer BUY 1 GET 1 FREE DRINKS for EVERYONE from 11am-9pm every day of shutdown @WTOP

That is right-present your Gov’t ID at our opening on Thursday for 3 free empanadas with any purchase. #havanaheat. pic.twitter.com/jWQWoY6wvy

In case of a government shutdown, NMWA will be open as usual, but offering free admission to federal employees—bring your IDs!

THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE SOME CONSIDERATE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD.

According to a CNN/ORC poll, 68% of Americans think shutting down the government for even a few days is a bad idea, while 27% think it’s a good idea.

And it appears most Americans would blame congressional Republicans for a shutdown: Sixty-nine percent said they agreed with the statement that the party’s elected officials were acting like “spoiled children.”

Now…for us, it’s just a waiting game. But, HEY, FURLOUGHED WORKERS, GO OUT AND ENJOY THOSE FREEBIES.

….Not as fun as it sounds though.

Amendment 54-46: Just hours to go before a shutdown

The last government shut down was in November of 1995. When the government shut down in 1995, they still got paid afterwards. However, since there are a lot more people who work for the government, the employees who do not continue to work during the shut down, definitely won’t get paid. Postal service, military, and police officers will still work if the government gets shut down and will get paid in “IOUs.”

“You don’t get to extract a ransom for doing your job, for doing what you’re supposed to be doing anyway, where just because there’s a law there that you don’t like,” the president said.

They may think shutting down the government is a good idea…but it will still cost money to reopen it as well!

Police Let Man Work for a Week Knowing He Was Going to Be Arrested for Child Pornography

Conrad

A Loudoun County art teacher, Watts Conrad, at Algonkian Elementary was arrested earlier this month for child pornography. Conrad was an ELEMENTARY school teacher that was being investigated by the Homeland Security and then was handed over to the Loudoun County Police Department. The one suspicious thing about this is that Conrad was being investigated since August 20! Conrad was arrested on September 10. The Homeland Security and the Loudoun County Police Department let Conrad work for AN ENTIRE WEEK AROUND CHILDREN, knowing that he was SOON GOING TO BE ARRESTED for CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.

Parents are furious with the police department due to the fact they had no idea that any of this was going on. They let Conrad be around the children for an ENTIRE week! How can they let that happen? The principal did not even know about this. Parents are now threatening to pull their children out of Algonkian Elementary due to this situation. However, do you blame them? This is exactly like the Public Policy Polling hiding the fact that a poll they took was never released AND it showed a Colorado lawmaker being recalled by a wide margin. Why do people do this? Yes, it may have kept them from tipping Conrad off, however, these are children that should not have been him if he was being investigated. In conclusion, the investigation is still going on but the evidence found on his computer seems to be from a website and does not have any LCPS children or any “home” photos on it.

Just Reach an Agreement

Congress has TWO WEEKS to make an agreement about funding for the Affordable Care Act. If an agreement is not made then the government will shutdown. This includes federal agencies from the Pentagon to the FBI. Obama refuses to negotiate over the debt limit, and says that it is the Congress’ job to make sure the Treasury can pay the bills from future congresses. To me, the Affordable Care Act is a HUGE positive and will help many people!

Cyberbullying: overpowering a young mind

Due to cyberbullying from MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS, yes MIDDLE SCHOOL, a 12-year-old girl, named Rebecca Sedwick,  committed suicide because she just couldn’t take the bullying anymore. Don’t people have respect for one another anymore? Why cant police do anything about those girls who bullied Rebecca? They say only the schools can do something about it. Well let me tell you something: screw the school system. An INNOCENT LITTLE GIRL killed herself because people were constantly messaging her mean and rude things. Those girls should have to pay for what they did to Rebecca. Those girls should be held responsible for everything they did to cause that girl depression and to have suicidal thoughts.

Rebecca

Rebecca and her mom

Sometimes people use the word “depression” in the most relaxed way. “I failed my test, I’m so depressed.” “Oh no, my pen doesn’t work, this is so depressing.” That is NOT depression nor is it anywhere near it. Depression: “I don’t want to die, I just want the pain to go away.” “I can’t move, I don’t want to talk to my friends or family, there isn’t anything in life to look forward to, I just want to sleep forever.” “What is the plan to kill myself? Do I have one? When should I do it?” All of those ARE SIGNS OF DEPRESSION. Why can’t people see the difference?

Rebecca2

Rebecca was home-schooled after being bullied the first time, and when she moves to a NEW middle school, she gets BULLIED again! Why can’t that go under stalking? Harassment? Verbal harassment? Forget “free speech.” I understand you have the right to say whatever the hell you want, but people should have that right taken away if there is a suicide in the end. This is such bullshit. Girls are mean, we all know that. No matter how young or old they are, they will continue to be mean to one another. Florida should allow their law enforcement to punish every single one of those girls who bullied Rebecca. What if it was their child? Cyberbullying is just going to keep happening; we’re letting it happen because there is no punishment for that and people know that. I don’t care what age you are, bullying and cyberbullying need to be stopped and there has to be someone out there to enforce it.

DoD and VA treatment for PTSD and brain injury inadequate, Legion says

Military

When our soldiers come home from war or any type of military training/deployment, they should be given the utmost respect and health care. Well, so far one of this is happening. Most people, if not all, respect the ones who are serving our country and doing what many of us would probably never do. We have men and women putting their lives on the line for us, and the DoD and VA are just offering the bare minimum of health care for the ones who are suffering Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

“William Detweiler, the past national commander of the Legion who chaired the committee, said the departments have relied on traditional medical treatments for TBI and PTSD cases.

‘They have not done a lot of research on alternative methods,’ he said in the statement. ‘There’s no simple answer to what works as far as PTSD or TBI is concerned, but we found that the (DoD and VA) medical profession shied away from certain things which they considered to be alternative medicine.'”

Why are they doing this? Why are they not expanding their research to help these people who have helped and saved us? Is money the issue? Then Congress and whoever else needs to step up and INCREASE THE BUDGET. Are they just too lazy to do more research? Maybe. However, as a citizen of the United States, I agree with the Legion in the fact that the Congress needs to oversee and fund the DoD and VA so more research can be down. It is people like this who let our country down. It is people like this who are the ones that are truly hurting America. Maybe that is pushing it a little too far, who knows; but all I want is for those suffering from PTSD and TBI to be helped and have some relief that everything will be okay. That when they put their lives on the line for us, we will do anything and everything to help get their lives back to “normal” or just comfort and care for them the way we should. This bullshit about not enough money needs to stop. No matter who it is or what happened, ALL PTSD and TBI should be treated correctly and the consideration for alternative medication should be at the top of everyone’s list who is working for this.
